Ubud
is undisputedly the centre of the artistic scene
in Bali. Famous for is painter's community. Ubud
is a special place in many ways: it has its own
magic, and its particularly beautiful surrounding
and gracious way of life have drawn celebrities
and artists from all over the world, some of whom
have adopted it as their own home. Paddy fields,
the monkey forest and a huge banyan tree create
a picturesque setting for this cultural centre.
Respected galleries such as Neka, Agung Rai,
and Rudana are worth visiting. Western artist
Antonio Balnco has his collection displayed at
his gallery and home and Hans Snel exhibits his
paintings at his restaurants and hotel off the
main road. The Seniwati Art Gallery features works
by women artist only.
A walk down the main road will take you past
countless smaller galleries with varied styles
of paintings and an electic collection of stores
selling clothing, house wares, antiques, jewellery,
handicrafts and a few good bookshops. The central
market sells a variety of goods.
