Administratively, Sanur is included in the city
of Denpasar. With its white sand, coconut trees
and some of the best international hotels on the
whole island just a few metres away, Sanur was
Bali's first beach resort. Tourism in Sanur began
in the 1930s. Expatriates, writers and other luminaries
had beach bungalows there. After independence,
the Dutch painter Le Mayeur lived there and gained
fame for his affair with and marriage to Ni Polok,
one of the best dancers of his day. Le Mayeur's
impressionistic work, can be seen at Le Mayeur
Museum near Inna Grand Bali Beach Hotel.
A
calm, quiet lagoon area, Sanur Beach offers great
conditions for windsurfing, parasailing, and other
recreational activities. The chic address of many
of Bali's rich and famous since the 1930's, Sanur
has a lively history and is still cherished by
many. The strecth from the Grand Bali Beach to
beyond the Bali Hyatt is served by a beach path,
making it possible to enjoy the many hotels and
restaurants along the strip. The calm waters of
Sanur beach make it very popular with families.
The charm of Sanur lies in the realtive tranquility
of its social scene. It is a resort for families
or visitors wanting the right mix of beach and
Balinese life. It is also has the immense advantage
of being much nearer inland tourists spots - just
half an hour from Ubud. Another advantage of Sanur
is its quieter beaches, making it a favourite
walking place.
