Candidasa in named after the temple overlooking
the freshwater lagoon on the road to Amlapura.
The temple is dedicate to Shiva and Hariti, so
it serves both Hindus and Buddhists Childless
couples come hereto pray for children. And on
the other hand Candidasa is smaller, more intimate
and offers betters value for money than the main
seaside resort.
This
small seaside resort still retains the tranquility
of a traditional fishing village. Its beach, although
narrow, is an excellent place to relax and take
in the spectacular panorama which includes the
islands of Lombok and Nusa Penida. Small boats
can be hired for snorkeling or pleasure cruises
to the rocky islets off the coast. The pace is
definitely much slower here than Kuta or Sanur
although tourists will find a good selection of
shops, restaurants, travel agents and money changers.
Accommodation in the area is good, making it a
good base from which to explore the sights of
the east Bali, arguably the best part of the island.
The beach road past Candi Dasa offers spectacular
views. A short drive will take you to the magnificent
rice terraces of Tirta Gangga and the exotic beauty
of the coastal strecth before the small town of
Amed. It is also close to Tenganan, a traditional
"Bali Aga" village where you can see
"double ikat" textiles being woven.
